Biography

A sculptor, painter and teacher, born in Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. Pope studied at Derby College of Art, 1943-5, then Slade School of Fine Art, 1945-8. Won a prize for stone-carving. He undertook many architectural commissions in the Midlands, including one by Basil Spence in 1966 for a figure of St Catherine on a church in Sheffield. The human figure, alone and in groups, was a preoccupation of Pope, who often sculpted in bronze using oxy-acetylene welding. Showed at Alwin Gallery, London, Yew Tree Gallery in Ingleby and Ninety-Three Gallery, Derby. The public gallery there, county council and public company collections hold his work. The exhibition 'Process and Progress: The Creative Journeys of Ronald Pope, and the Artists of the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award' is currently showing at Derby Museums.
